How can I avoid some sightseeing crowds during the Olympics in Beijing? What else should I do while there?

It’s not my first time to Asia (Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan, southern China). I’d love to see the major attractions like The Great Wall, but don’t want my memory of these fantastically historic places to be marred by ’stupid tourists’. I wonder if I should just avoid them altogether and plan another visit later. Thoughts?
I have tickets for four events the second week. But I’ll be there the whole first week.
