Ways to Save Money on Travel

April 30th, 2009 — 02:31 am

The country may be in a recession but there is an upside to it. Hotels and other resorts are slashing their rates by more than 50% during the peak and off season which means you can take a vacation. But to do that, you have to know the different Methods to Spend Less Money if you decide to vacations.

First, plan your vacation way ahead of time and travel to places that are not frequented by tourists at that time. During the summer, head to winter resorts instead of the beaches. If it gets too cold, go to places that are warm like the tropics.

Before you buy your ticket and book your reservation, go online and compare the rates of the different vacations organizations. You may find a 3 day 2 night package to a destination of your choice that is less than $500 per person. You just have to look carefully through each one by not only looking at the price but also what is included in the package.

People who fly often on business can Spend Less on vacations by gaining more frequent flyer miles. After traveling a certain distance, you can redeem it which could get you a round trip ticket to a destination of your choice so check regularly how many miles you have earned.

If buying a ticket is not in your budget, take a road trip instead. You might enjoy seeing something nearby instead of flying hundreds of miles away. If you calculate the costs, the money you pay for gas and food could still be cheaper than going somewhere else. You can also Be Frugal if you decide not to stay in a hotel but rather camp out in a tent.

For people who do have the money for airfare, you can still Spend Less by staying in a smaller establishment rather than a 5 star hotel. You have the option to rent a condo or an apartment that are bigger than hotel rooms and even have their own kitchen which allows you to cook.

Some locals even rent out a room or have a dorm that they can offer which is great especially if you and your group are going backpacking or simply want to save your money for other thrills.

If you are up to it, try what other people have done called house swapping. Here, you exchange your place with another homeowner for a few days. The nice thing about it is that you don’t pay anything for your stay.

You don’t have to take a vacation on the road or take to the air to have a great time. You can also take to the sea since there are cruises and if you get lucky, you could be a huge discount if there are some passengers who canceled in the last minute which means there is room for you on board.

Chances are, you have probably made a bid on EBay or some other auction site and know the mechanics. Did you know some sites allow you to bid for a vacation? To win, you have to give the lowest bid which is the exact opposite of what you do when you bid online.

There are Ways to Be Frugal on vacations. You should compare the rates and consider your options before planning your vacation.

Soak Up Some History in Scotland

April 28th, 2009 — 10:30 am

Historic Scottish Castles

Many people in the UK are considering ’staycations’ this year, instead of jetting off to the Canaries or the Costa del Sol for the sun. Staying at home and visiting many interesting destinations that are within easy reach is becoming increasingly popular as people try to save money and lessen their carbon footprints.

One destination that is proving increasingly popular is Scotland. One of the main attractions that brings people to Scotland is the countries colourful history.

Scottish history is enormously interesting and often quite bloody. There have been many battles on Scottish soil and the country is littered with ancient castles and grand homes. The armed forces used many stately homes and castles during the second world war for troops and hospitals. Some became damaged and run down leading to their demolition. It’s interesting to note that during the 1960s around one large house was pulled down every week somewhere in Scotland.

Luckily this practice came to an end but property owners were faced with huge maintenance and repair costs. Many have now been restored into functioning homes and hotels like the fantastic Victorian Glenapp Castle hotel which was acquired by hoteliers in 1994. Extensive restoration has turned this Victorian castle into a popular and luxurious five star hotel.

Many Scottish castles are nothing more than ruins, which isn’t surprising when you consider their age and history. Castle Sween is one such ancient castle. Originally built in the 11th or 12th century it is said to named after an 11the century Dane, Sueno. Robert the Bruce captured the castle in 1315.

To make the most of your visit to a Scottish castle I suggest you refer to a good Scottish castle reference guide for a little historic background. This will really bring your visit to life as you picture the people who lived, loved, worked and died in the castle.

For a truly fantastic and memorable holiday I can whole heartedly recommend a tour of ancient castles and monuments north of the border in Scotland.

When flying from Edinburgh or Glasgow I always book my Edinburgh Airport Parking or my Glasgow Airport Parking space in advance as this always gives me savings of up to 60%.

A Travel Distance Calculator Do You Need One?

April 26th, 2009 — 08:03 pm

The appearance of the online travel distance calculator has changed things in favor of journey planning. Previously to the use of the online variant, travelers exclusively relied on maps and travel guide info in order to estimate the fuel consume and the time necessary to get from one location to another. Nowadays, there are plenty of web pages that offer a travel distance calculator option, but the most popular of variants are Google Maps and MapQuest. There is one common element with such sites: the basic travel distance calculator that requires you to introduce the point of origin and that of destination, and it gives you the results in miles and kilometers. But there is more to it than the simple distance indication!

What can one expect from the Google travel distance calculator? There are lots of hotel reservation links as well as info that a traveler finds relevant. The formats of the travel distance calculators vary too; thus, some are designed to indicate the distances only for a specific country, while others cover additional features to show distances between cities abroad. A good illustration here is Map Crow, that functions as a tool to calculate distances between cities outside of the United States: from Paris to Rome for instance, but Map Crow also allows one to make less specific calculations like those between countries.

The clear advantage of a travel distance calculator is that it gives the requested data in a matter of seconds, enhancing work efficiency and making the access to information a lot easier. There are people who by the nature of their job need the travel distance calculator, therefore, they find it a most helpful tool in a variety of applications. Thus, transport and logistic companies that operate goods transport all around the world use the travel distance calculator to find out the specific and non-specific gas consume, as well as to approximate other variables.

Drivers benefit most from the use of the travel distance calculator and they also rely on the tool extensively. For distances between countries or for itineraries that involve flying, the travel distance calculator remains an optional informative tool that has a reduced level of applicability. You will surely not check with a travel distance calculator for flying from Phoenix to Washington. Yet, there are specialized travel distance calculator models that indicate distances in air miles for instance, but such equipment is normally purchased by professional air lines as part of the operational software.

One vacation you may need a travel distance calculator for is a Jamaica Sailing Vacation

Jojo asked:

If so, details please!! I am planning a cruise with my girlfriends, however, some of us are not able to travel until September. I’ve been reading about hurricane season and contemplating if we should still take the risk of going to the Caribbeans and Miami in September. This will be everyone’s first time on a cruise and to both destinations. Any information would help! Where to stay, go and party in Miami. What to do on cruise and on the islands.

Where in Europe should my husband and I visit in March in Europe?

April 25th, 2009 — 03:16 am
visit europe
Kim G asked:

My husband works with the United Nations and he has been gone from the United States since last May. He came home for a visit (we have 4 children) in December and I’m planning to meet him somewhere in Europe in March for a little get-a-away for only the two of us. I would like to go somewhere with a lot of history to it but also romantic. We both love the Sea and learning history of ancient times and worlds.
