Costa Rica: Experience Pura Vida

December 31st, 2008 — 06:21 pm

Costa Rica is located in Central America. It’s part of the land mass which connects North America and South America. Costa Rica is bordered by Panama to the south, The Pacific Ocean to the west, Nicaragua to the north, and the Caribbean Sea is its eastern border.

Costa Rica has many miles of beaches- approximately 635 miles on the Pacific side, and 132 miles on the Caribbean side. Costa Rica is about 10 degrees above the equator, so the climate is mostly tropical.

Since Costa Rica seats between two oceans and two continents, it has a wide variety of plant and animal species. Some have named Costa Rica has one of Mother Nature’s greatest wonders. The country is defined as extremely bio-diverse, and is home to a huge number of plant and fauna species. Actually, the region has 8 biological reserves, 20 national parks, and many other protected areas, guaranteed to thrill the most devoted nature lover.

There are seven provinces in Costa Rica: Alajuela, Cartago, Heredia, Limon, Guanacaste, Puntarenas, and San Jose. The ecotourism focus is evident in all these areas, as you experience a wide variety of natural formations, including rainforests, mountains, beaches, rivers and volcanoes. In addition, you can see more than 2000 kinds of trees, 200 species of mammals, 800 kinds of ferns, and 1,000 kinds of orchids. Clearly, there are many things to do in Costa Rica.

Five percent of all known animals live in Costa Rica. In fact, the land bridge that Costa Rica sits on is thought to be responsible for the diversity of animals within the country, as some traveled down from North America, and some traveled up from South America.

And the natural charm doesn’t stop there. As mentioned previously, Costa Rica has several hundred miles of coastline- and where there is coastline, there are beaches. The edge of the country has hundreds of miles of beaches, with the ones on the Pacific side being more secret, less developed, and smaller than those on the Caribbean side. Mountains run from north to south, determining the interior landscape of the country. The country’s capital, San Jose, is in the center of Costa Rica, and sits within a mountain valley.

Due to the presence of beaches and mountains, Costa Rica has a unique geographic environment. It has seven active volcanoes, along with several dormant ones. It also has a large network of rivers, in addition to the beaches and mountains we’ve already covered.

Costa Rica truly is a natural paradise. Due to its location, temperatures are constant throughout the year, varying only a few degrees through the seasons. Since it is a tropical country, days are usually hot, but the nights bring with them a cool tropical breeze.

If you want to experience lounging at the beach, hiking in the mountains, and getting up close with all kinds of animals and plant species, you won’t find a better place to do this than Costa Rica.

Sharm, Egypt: Night Life and White Sand Beaches

December 29th, 2008 — 11:00 am

Sharm, or more formally, Sharm el Sheikh, is one of the hottest travel destinations in the Arab world, and for good reason. It has quickly become one of the finest diving spots in the world, and the variety of activities available to the traveler is mind boggling.

Forty years ago, Sharm Egypt wasn’t much more than a tiny fishing village. But during Israel’s occupation, the land near Sharm’s center began to be developed and it gradually transformed into a tourist destination. It now contains most of the amenities that you would expect to find in a travel destination, except that it’s been able to maintain its historic roots.

Sharm and nearby Hurghada are located on the Red Sea coast, and just offshore there is a wide variety of aquatic life and beautiful coral, including sharks and dolphins, if that’s your cup of tea! Sharm caters to scuba divers of all levels, so even if you’re new to the activity, you’ll find a reputable dive operator who will take you out.

If scuba diving is not for you, there are plenty of other beach activities that you can take part in. Hurghada and Sharm beaches have luxuriouos white sand and the water is crystal clear. Bad pictures are almost impossible to take here!

Most of the hotels in Sharm, are located in the Na’ama Bay neighborhood, a long sandy bay with a beautiful, palm-fringed boulevard. Other popular neighborhoods include Ras Um Sid and Sharm El Maya, which is near the older Sharm el Sheikh development.

Egypt entertains more than 5 million travelers every year, and in recent years, over one fourth of them have visited Sharm. The locals are very friendly and accommodating with tourists, but there are still some taboo customs that you should be aware of if you’re planning a holiday. To get the most out of your vacation, look into Egypt packages, which will help you plan your visit.

For the most part, most of Egypt is generally safe. There is very little violent crime, and the most likely crime that you could be exposed to would be pick pocketing, but security is stationed in many public areas to protect the travelers’ interests.

Sharm is a beautiful city in an amazingly historical city. If you plan a vacation to Sharm, whether on its on or as part of one of the available Egypt packages, you will not be disappointed, and you will leave with some fantastic memories (and hopefully photographs) that will last a lifetime.

The Fasting Month of Rahmadhan

December 28th, 2008 — 06:59 am

Medan City

Fasting Month of Rahmadhan in Medan North Sumatra Indonesia

There are several things that visitors need to be aware during the fasting month when traveling to Muslim countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia etc.

Ramadan, the fasting month, is an event of great importance to the Indonesian and the world’s Muslim community. Being one of the five pillars of Islam, observance of the fasting month is the priority in the devout Muslim’s life during this month. Fasting involves a change in the daily routine of the Muslims and represents an expression of their deep belief in God.

Many Indonesians look forward to the month of Ramadan as an opportunity to test and develop their inner, spiritual selves. The fasting regimen is rigorous. No drinking, eating or smoking is allowed after the first prayer in the morning until the opening of the fast in the evening.

Prayer times change based on sunset and sunrise, so the exact time will be different every day. The morning prayer usually starts around 4.30 AM. Before this time, all Muslim families must rise and consume the last food or drink that they will have for the next fourteen hours.

The opening of the fast, or Buka Puasa, occurs around 6.00 PM in the evening. At this time, all fasting Muslims will break the fast by drinking, eating and attending prayers. Expect restaurants to be more busy than usual especially those that are serving Indonesian food as many families may not cook for this breaking fast period.

During this time, you may noticed that some restaurants may be closed or are opening discretely with curtains covering up windows of restaurants during the fasting time. This is a sign of respect for those who are fasting.

You can see an example of a picture taken at www.MedanKu.com where restaurants have prepared curtains to cover up the windows including fast food chains for Rahmadhan.

Other ways visitors should do as a sign of respect are:

* Be discreet when consuming food. Do not to eat or drink in public places except for restaurants.
* Be observant and dont offer food or drink during the fasting hours to those who are fasting.
* Be respectful and do not showcase your own food or drinks in public places.
* Be empathetic and tolerant as you may find energy levels of those who are fasting to be low which may affect service levels and lower performance.

Medan maybe unknown to many international travelers. It is the third largest city in Indonesia and is famous for having the largest crater volcanic lake in the world known as Medan Lake Toba

Idea #1 – Create Your Own Basket

Making your own bath and spa gift basket is quite easy and fun to do, and not to mention, this is the perfect way to make this gift special and memorable, especially if you are the significant other. The first thing you do is to find a really nice basket, let it be as decorative as you want. A simpe decorative liner or colorful paper tissue can enhance your basket. Place a nice ribbon or lovely lace on it, then fill up your basket with things such as lotions, bath balls, moisturizers, bath salts, manicure sets, facial masks and a massage tool.

You can theme your gift basket by using such flavors as fragrant vanilla. You can even add a little charm by putting gourmet chocolates and don’t forget to finish it off with a spa gift certificate! The idea here is simple, you want that person to pamper themselves with the bath and spa gifts. Now all you have to do is wrap it with clear plastic, put a nice colorful bow and present it at the right moment.

If you don’t have enough time to create your own then buying spa gift baskets sets is the easiest way. There are a couple ways to accomplish this. First, browse the internet to get some ideas on how to make up your gift basket, then make a list. This will also give you an idea on how much you would like to spend. Second, go to your favorite or popular bath and body store. A great source to find a store is the yellow pages, the internet or friends and coworkers.

At the store you can have one of the sales people show you the different products to help you create your bath and spa gift baskets. Browsing store allows you to go around, pick up, touch and smell the wonderful products on display. To put the final touch in your gift basket you will need to get a spa certificate and by going to a day spa you can choose different packages of spas available.

The Best Idea: Your Surprise Is A Gift That Gives Back

When you are ready to give your bath spa gift basket to that special person, they will be totally surprised and will be sure to enjoy it. Shrewsbury: What To Do When You Visit Shrewsbury

December 28th, 2008 — 06:59 am

Shrewsbury is located in Shropshire, close to the Welsh border. It still retains many of the timber framed black and white buildings that were built during the medieval period and which sit along the sides of its narrow steep streets and alleyways.

Not counting the castle and abbey, Shrewsbury has more than 600 listed buildings within the town. Also this is where Charles Darwin was born and raised and where he was educated. The town still has many reminders about Darwin.

When staying in Shrewsbury you can either take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the River Severn which loop around it. Or for a lazier time, there are pleasure trips  on the river. However there is plenty more for one to do and see when you stay in Shrewsbury. Below we take a look at just a few attractions in and around Shrewsbury that are worth visiting.

1.     Acton Burnell Castle – This houses the remains of a 13th Century fortified manor house, built by Robert Burnell. This gentleman was Chancellor of England a close friend to the then King of England, Edward First. The king visited the house regularly and he convened one of the first English parliaments here in 1263.

2.    Attingham Park – This beautiful park which was designed by Humphrey Repton in 1797 surrounds the manor house of the same name that was designed by George Stuart in 1785. It was home to the first Lord Berwick and is situated just four miles to the southeast of Shrewsbury town. The house is furnished with furniture and silver from the Regency period. As for the park wander around the grounds and enjoy some peace and tranquility.

3.    Abbey Church – This is all that now remains of the Benedictine Monastery founded in 1083 by Roger de Montgomery. Made from red sandstone this church is dedicated to the saints Peter and Paul. As you approach the church by coming across the English Bridge you will see the very striking west tower which is of an early Gothic design and on it you will see a statue of Edward the Third. The west window of the church has a coat of arms on it dating back to the reign of Richard the Second. Some of the tombs in the church date back to the 1300’s.

When you next stay in Shrewsbury, choose your hotel in Shrewsbury here.
