Traveling Jobs – Learn How to Write Travel Articles and Holiday Reviews

June 29th, 2008 — 08:54 pm
travel article
A dream of many writers is to get traveling jobs as journalists and travel for free. In this article you can learn how to write great travel articles and holiday reviews and what you should avoid.

Most journalists are naturally curious. They also tend to be restless, sociable creatures with a taste for adventure who enjoy exploring new places, meeting new people and finding out more about unfamiliar cultures and lifestyles. It should come as no surprise that journalists who love to travel want to share their experiences in print wherever possible.

Travel writing is an extremely competitive market. There is no destination that hasn’t been written about a million times, so it is vitally important to get the right angle to make your article stand out above the rest.

For thousands of writers, writing for a top travel magazine would be the dream job. However your professional credentials must be impeccable. This will mean you will have a sound track record and be regularly printed, ideally in a range of publications. You will also be reasonably traveled and have the ability to gather enough suitable material for new articles that will stand out.

Newspaper and magazine travel articles will often be more geared towards the consumer. In other words, the readers want to find out what aspects of the destination would appeal to them, rather than the chronological ins and outs of the writers own experiences. Getting to know your market is the most important factor when writing travel articles.

Don’t let all this put you off. Be persistent and try to get yourself published by any means you can in order to build up a good portfolio. For those new to the world or travel writing, the first step might be to submit articles to a local paper if it accepts travel articles. This won’t give you a lot of money, but offers you the much needed experience.

Getting the right angle

As with any other feature, it is important to have a clear sense of purpose about why you are writing a specific article. It’s not usually good enough to say you are going to ‘do’ an article about the Maldives as this has been done many times before. Try think about what is different, original, unusual or topical about your feature that is going to stand out. You could write about anything. For example; the pudding eating championships!

Pictures

You might be fortunate to find an editor that has a good source for pictures, but don’t count on it. It is imperative that travel articles to be accompanied by photographs. It is a sound investment for any journalist to buy a good digital camera so such a purpose. However do check with your editor ahead of time what size and format they want them to come in.

Honestly is the best policy

Even if you’ve been lucky enough to have someone else to pay for your holiday, do not be obliged to write a more positive article as a result. You will be letting your readers down if you don’t give your honest opinion.

Avoid ‘brochure speak’

Unless you’re writing a review for travel company to sell a holiday, there is no need to lace your travel articles with hype and over blown descriptions with an enthusiastic tone. For your article to sound genuine and authentic, most of it will have to rely on eyewitness accounts first hand, rather than culled from other guide books.

Most importantly you want to tell your readers what the place is really like as they can read the brochures for themselves if they want to be sold to. This isn’t always as easy as it sounds- you will need to perfect your observation skills to make your travel article original and where appropriate, humorous.

Great Places to Visit – London

June 23rd, 2008 — 01:13 pm
visit london
London is a great place. London as a major capital city deserves respect.

London like all major cities has had its good times as well as it’s bad times and I have been there for most of them.

From the ecstatic heights in 2005 of being told that it was to be the home of the 2012 Olympics to the awful depths of having the news broken of the Harrods and Hyde Park bombings London has had the experience and gravity to treat both with equal respect.

I remember travelling through London to return home to Northern Ireland where I now live on the day the news broke that Princess Diana had tragically been killed in a car accident in Paris. The almost hypnotic manner with which mourners just blindly made their way to Kensington Palace to lay flowers was quite eerie. Then at the other end of the spectrum you have London the day of the “Live 8” Festival in Hyde Park where the city centre was brought to a standstill with blaring rock music belting out across the entire City Centre.

There is so much history in London. Real live, vibrant living history in London that sometimes when you live there just passes you by and you take everything for granted.

If we use as an example, the changing of the guard. A daily occurrence at Betty and Phil’s place at the end of the mall. Perhaps I should be slightly more serious at this point because most onlookers will realize this point I am of course referring to Buckingham Palace and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh. Perhaps the most notable of the Changing of the Guards in recent years was held shortly after the awful events of 911 when instead of playing God Save the Queen the band of the Guards performed what turned out to be quite an emotional performance (certainly for those visiting American tourists in the audience) of the Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States of America.

It was important to note the significance of this event in that it was the only time that any other national anthem had been played at the changing of the guards instead off God Save the Queen.

It could be argued that it is incidents like this that go to sum up exactly what a rich variety of tradition and history exists in London. Unlike other major international capital cities, London may lack perhaps the historic grandeur of the Parthenon in Athens or the Coliseum in Rome but through out London you will find examples of perhaps a more modern architecture (though no less splendid and impressive) such as the mother of all parliaments, the Houses of Parliament in Westminster or the serenity of St Paul’s Cathedral a survivor of many centuries and in many ways every bit as impressive now as in the days of its design under the architect Sir Christopher Wren.

The construction and existence of St Paul’s Cathedral is a wonderful example if anyone needed of how history, living history can survive great national and international catastrophes such as the great fire of London and then 400 years later the blitz of World War II.

Possibly the existence of living history such as St. Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of such a modern and a bustling city of London really sums up the overall appeal of London where there is such an amazing and historic blend of old and new.

There is absolutely no way a visit to London will disappoint

We hope that you enjoy our london guide & that it gives you plenty of reports about things to do in the city, in addition to a bit of history & some interesting facts.

London has a long and interesting history, which initiated when the romans established the first major settlement there in AD 43 after the Roman conquest of great britain.

London was particularly prosperous in the eighteenth century and it became the largest city in the world from 1831 to 1925. the growth of london was aided by London’s first railways, which put countryside towns within easy reach of the city. The railway network expanded very rapidly, which made London grow into its surrounding areas and merge with nearby settlements for instance Kensington.

Ever since then, London has continued to thrive and it has stayed one of the world’s largest cities.

Because it’s the capital of britain, London boasts the perfect museums in the country. One of the perfect is the Science Museum, which is in south kensington. The museum was formed in 1857 and boasts over 300 000 exhibits, including Puffing Billy and Stephenson’s Rocket.

The city boasts many of fabulous galleries too, including the National Portrait gallery.

London is well-known for its exclusive cocktail bars, nightclubs & theatres. One of the best-known clubs is Fabric , which is situated in Leicester Square. This huge nightclub has a 1600 capacity & it attracts some huge name DJs, especially on Fridays when it holds its renowned Fabric Live event.

Travel Writing: How to Make Money Blogging About Your Travels

June 11th, 2008 — 12:56 pm
travel article
Have you ever wanted to travel the world and make money for sharing your adventures with the world? Using the web and a simple blog, this couldn’t be easier. There are just a few simple, yet hidden techniques for making a healthy income for blogging about your travels.

In fact, the number of underground travelers who hold no jobs, yet make cash for writing about their  travels is growing by the day. We keep our mouths shut about our techniques as we visit worldwide destinations and get paid for telling the world about it. I know there have got to be great people out there who deserve to travel and want this information, so I’ve decided to share a few of our techniques:

1)   Own Your Blog. Sites like Blogger, Myspace, and BlogSpot are no good for our purposes, because you can’t tweak the site to make a profit very easily. Instead, if you buy a domain for 10 bucks and then install Wordpress, you now have the platform to make it extremely profitable.

2)    Utilize PPC (pay-per-click) to get started. You won’t make a massive income off of this right away, but you can easily make 5-10 bucks a day in the beginning. That may not sound like a lot… but it’s enough for a meal every day or a flight after a month, and the number only gets bigger as your blog grows in readership.

3)    Collect names and email addresses.
You want to do this so that you can bring your readers back to your blog. Very few people ‘bookmark’ a site any longer, but if you email your readers every time you post a new article, you will grow your readership at an exponential rate.

4)    Offer an RSS (Real Simple Syndication) subscriptions. Don’t let this intimidate you. Setting this up is as simple as checking a box on your blog’s options. RSS is another way for your readers to keep up-to-date with your blog. Insead of you emailing them, their RSS reader of choice will automatically show them the newly posted content. The more they see your content, the better chance they’ll click on an ad (and therefore, the better chance you’ll get paid)

5)    Sell a product that will interest your readers. Once you are up and running, you will see your readership growing as well. Now it’s time to really monetize your site. This is where affiliate marketing comes in. This is simply taking a commission for any customer you send to another product (considering they buy the product). So, every now and again, make a blog post about the affiliate product you are promoting. When your readers see this, those who are interested will click on your ‘affiliate link,’ and if they buy, you get paid. Easy as that. Becoming an affiliate is always free, and there are thousands of products begging for active affiliates.

By the way, affiliate commissions are typically 50% to 75%. Gigantic, and very profitable.

6)    Create your own product.
The only problem with affiliate marketing is that the product is completely out of your control and you only take a part of the cut. Once you have a bunch of blog posts, you can bundle them together and make an ‘ebook.’ Sell this to your loyal readers, and you’ll be surprised at how many of them will pay for the content they’re getting for free anyway!

There are bloggers out there who are making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for writing about their passions. My instincts tell me you’d be happy with a few hundred or thousand dollars extra per week, so start taking action on these ideas. They’re not complicated, they just require action. The best part is, once they’re set up, they can all be automated and can take place without your presence!
