What is the easiest way to visit new york city?

visit city
Manda asked:

Where is a cheaper/more safe area that we could stay to visit new york city? Mostly we want to walk around the city for a few days and go to the Conan show. Would you recommend staying in New Jersey? What specific parts of NJ? How easy is it to get from NJ to NYC?

Public transport may be your best choice right now due to high gas prices.

If you stay in NJ it will be a lot cheaper. If you were to stay in Hoboken or Secaucus, your no more than a 20 min commute to the city and its VERY easily accesible from the Path station. I would definitely stay in NJ.

    I recommend Manhattan.

If you stay in NJ, you’ll have to deal with traffic and cab fares. If you’re driving, you’ll have to find places to park. Near impossible.

You should be able to find a hotel in Manhattan for a reasonable amount on hotels.com.

I went a few years ago and stayed a block from Times Square. We walked just about everywhere we wanted to go. If it was too far, we took a cab. Good times.

Dont stay in the Bronx or Queens… they are very dangerous towns….. ummm go by train, its the cheapest, gas is very expensive, and dont fly there!

Agreed, staying in NYC is insanely overpriced. Stay in jersey take a cab into the city where ever you wanna go for the day. You’ll save a fortune. My friend stayed there a few weeks ago and paid like 350 for some simple room without a view. Public transportation to jersey and then cabs. Best way to go about it. Besides driving in NYC is no picnic for someone that has never done it.

no don’t stay in jersey. I did that one time, biggest mistake ever. (I was in Seacacus) I paid a cab $70 (which is about the amount we saved on the hotel) to take me 3 miles across to Manhatten ($95 on the way back because the idiot got lost when he said he knew where he was going and charged us for HIS mistake) because they are crossing statelines they can **** you on the charge and no one can do anything about it. On the website, the hotel looked clean and nice and had a good name, it was disgusting and run down and when I stepped outside for a smoke I thought I was going to get shot. The walls were paperthin the beds were uncomfortable and I really didn’t sleep much.

I stayed at the Holiday inn on Lafayette in Soho (right next to Canal St. and all the awesome shopping there). it was a nice hotel, clean, I never felt unsafe, right beside a couple different subway stops, within walking distance of others. (btw a ride all day pass on the subway is $7 per person. a pretty good deal. and I found the subways fairly clean, they were air condditioned. it’s a pretty good way toget around. not as confusing as the map may look at first either) it was great. I would recommend that hotel to anyone. It was one of the cheaper hotels that I could find in Manhatten as well. Just a few blocks from Little Italy.

My friend, if you want to save money, then stay in Jersey City or Hoboken, NJ. From there you can take the PATH train into and out of Manhattan.

If you want to stay where the action is, then Manhattan is the best place to go. If Midtown Manhattan is to expesive for you, you can stay on the Upper West Side.

    Good luck

While it may be cheaper in room rental cost, staying in jersey will cost you more in transportation and time. It is easy to underestimate commuting time and if you only have a few days it might be better to bite the bullet and pay a little more to be where you want to be. Also many parts of new jersey are considerably more dangerous than most of the city. The tourist friendly parts of the city are all relatively safe and even most of the boroughs aren’t too bad these days. Long Island City in Queens (just across the river from manhattan) has a number of new hotels that are much more reasonable than the heart of the city without sacrificing safety or long commutes. If you look around and get a decent deal I think you would likely be happier staying in town than a few miles away. Anyway you want to take a trip to NYC right? Not Jersey City with a side trip to manhattan…

I just went to newyork 1 week ago, and i stayed in NJ because all the hotel is sooooo expensive. THere is always bus around so consider taking a bus from NJ to NY. If you want to avoid traffic, wake up around 6:30 to 7:00, eat breakfast in hotel, and take a bus to NY. I remember myself staying at this hotel with N as an alphabet…Anyway, i stay at newark, NJ and if you follow the instructions, traveling in NewYork will be the easiest it can get.
